Although high level athletes are welcome at Bulldog Interactive Fitness, Holly Bond, who has been working out regularly for more than two decades, and her partner and husband James Bond, kept regular kids in mind for the gym when they opened the first Bulldog Interactive Fitness. Kids, like their son Matthew, now 16 years old, who was the reason Bulldog was born.
Back in November of 2003, Holly noticed that her son had been slowly gaining weight. His diet was healthy for the most part, but he would spend eight hours at a time on his computer playing Xbox. Matthew had ballooned to 193 pounds, too much for his 5-foot-8 frame.
"We just sat down one day with him and said, 'You know, we have a problem.' He knew right away what we were talking about," Holly recalled. "But kids don't have a lot of options," Holly noted. "Not everyone can make a team. And we shelter our kids these days. We don't let them walk through the woods or neighborhoods. We drive them everywhere. We're protecting them, but we're making them very unhealthy, at the same time."
James and Holly thought about buying some gym equipment for their home. When Matthew's friends heard that they were going to have a gym in their house, they called to see if they could work out there too. This made the Bond's stop and think: this wasn't just THEIR problem, this was a problem shared by many, many parents. For two years, James and Holly researched equipment options, spoke to dozens of fitness professionals and doctors, and worked on creating and testing programs.
The Bonds realized that they had stumbled onto a winning idea; Holly quit her job as a pharmaceutical representative and they opened Bulldog Interactive Fitness.
Holly's passion for fitness and kids combined with the Bond's entrepreneurial spirit made a winning combination. They work tirelessly with advisors and fitness professionals from all over North America to continue to create exciting and fun, safe fitness programs for kids. They have surrounded themselves with a team of professionals dedicated to seeking new and better ways to make our children healthier. By the way, their son Matthew has lost 22 pounds and is now a lean, 6-foot-2 young man with a higher self-esteem and school grades to be proud of.
